He thinks that she may have been his girlfriend from long ago whom he has never seen since then. He wants to find her so that he can ask her about their relationship and perhaps even ask her to marry him again.

He has met someone else in his life who looks like her and talks like her but he does not think that she is the same person that he met at the party many years ago. So when Nicola tells him that she has never been offered diamonds before, it is clear to him that this woman is not who he thinks she is. This scene shows how much this character admires Nicola and how much he misses his old relationship with her because when they were together all those years ago they were always talking about diamond rings or wedding bands or other precious items like diamonds.
